Take This To Heart

  -

“So watch yourselves carefully, since you did not see any form on the day the LORD spoke to you from the fire…” — Deuteronomy 4:15

In our image-obsessed world, seeing is believing. If it’s not posted online, did it even happen? From AI-enhanced selfies to curated vacation photos, we’re constantly fed carefully selected images to shape how we feel and what we think.

Yet, when the LORD revealed Himself to Israel at Mount Sinai, there was no form to worship, no photo to manipulate, and no heavenly figure stepping out of the cloud. Just God’s voice.

While images can be idolized, His Word calls us to trust in the unseen promises of God.

Walking by Faith, Not by Sight

Hebrews 11 tells us that “faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.”

Faith has always been about listening rather than looking.

We often think, “If I could just see God move in my marriage… in this illness… in my child’s heart…” But seeing isn’t believing. Faith comes by hearing God’s Word. Faith is trusting His Word, even when life doesn’t look the way we expected.

Don’t Reimagine God

Moses warned Israel not to “act corruptly and make a graven image” (Deut. 4:16). Why? Because it’s human nature to try and reshape God into something we can manage—something familiar, controllable, and less holy.

They had just witnessed the Red Sea part for them to walk through and then crash down on Egypt’s army. Amazing! God supernaturally and powerfully rescued them from Egypt to be with Him! Yet the moment He didn’t show up the way they wanted, they melted their gold, made a calf, and called it the god who saved them.

We can do the same—no, we don’t fashion golden idols to worship, but we do love and serve material things or preferred ideologies, politics, success, values, and traditions. We reduce God to a mascot for our political causes or spiritual preferences. But God refuses to be reduced to anything we can control.

He is the One who spoke the universe into existence and created all things, the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end, the Great I Am, who loved the world so much that He gave His only Son, heals the brokenhearted, and who shall return in glory.

He is holy, jealous in love, and deeply personal.

Jealousy That Saves

Deuteronomy 4:23 “So watch yourselves, that you do not forget the covenant of the LORD your God, which He made with you, and make for yourselves a graven image in the form of anything against which the LORD your God has commanded you. 24 For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.”

God’s jealousy isn’t rooted in insecurity. It’s the burning love of a Father who sees His kids running toward destruction and cries, “Stop! Come back to Me!”

His jealousy is protective. Passionate. Active. Think of Jesus when He saw people burdened by religion, enslaved to idols, or crushed by sin. He flipped tables in the temple because God’s house was meant to be a place of prayer, not performance or profit.

You may have walked away or are considering doing so. He wants you to receive His love. Even if you’ve wandered, even if you’re ashamed—His heart still burns for you.

You may have chased after other idols. You may think God’s got His mind on anything but you. Even if you’ve wandered, even if you’re ashamed—His heart still burns for you. He is jealous for your good and your return. Your Father in heaven wants you to receive His love, not prove you deserve it.

What If You’ve Failed?

Deuteronomy 4:29 says, “You will seek the LORD your God, and you will find Him if you search for Him with all your heart.” … 31 For the LORD your God is a compassionate God,  He will not fail you nor … forget the covenant with your fathers He swore to them.

God knew Israel would fail. He knows our weakness, too. And still, He promises to be found. To be gracious. To welcome us home.

He’s not looking for perfection. He’s calling for a return.

Has Anything Like This Ever Happened?

Moses closes with awe: Has any other god done what our God has done? Parted seas? Rescued us from our enemies? Spoken holy words from the midst of fire?

We get to ask even more shocking questions:

  • Has any god become flesh?

  • Has any god borne our guilt?

  • Has any god died for sinners and risen again?

No. Only Jesus.

Take This to Heart

Deuteronomy 4:39 “Know therefore today, and take it to your heart, that the LORD, He is God in heaven above and on the earth below; there is no other.”

Take this personal. There is no other God who knows you, loves you, rescues you, and walks with you.
