Seeing God’s Glory: A Key to Renewing Your Passion for Him

Steve Behlke   -

Many Christians have been struggling to maintain their passion for the Lord post-COVID, resulting in lower participation in church, and fewer people serving and sharing Jesus with those who do not know Him.

Although passion ebbs and flows, this seems more dire.

Perhaps it’s a lingering effect of COVID and the lockdowns, the craziness of the world, the fast pace of life, or the constant distractions of modern technology. Whatever the cause may be, many feel exhausted and a bit disconnected from God and church, and a life of faith.

So, what can we do if we’ve lost our passion for God?

One powerful thing that Scripture makes clear is the importance of seeing God in all His glory. Whenever we behold God in His greatness, His grandness, His holiness, and His infinite power, all of which transcend us, it has the potential to humble us, convict us, and awaken our devotion to Him.

Whenever we behold God in His greatness, His grandness, His holiness, and His infinite power, all of which transcend us, it has the potential to humble us, convict us, and awaken our devotion to Him.

For example, when Isaiah saw the Lord in Isaiah 6:1-8, it humbled and convicted him, giving him clarity and awakening his devotion to God and His mission.

Similarly, when Job saw the awesomeness of God’s power and wisdom, and authority, it humbled him with renewed hope and passion.

When Jesus revealed His kingdom glory on the Mount of Transfiguration, it ignited fresh faith and passion in His disciples.

None of us can reignite our own passion; only the Holy Spirit can do so. However, we can immerse ourselves in these stories and ask God to reveal His glory to us. “Refocus us on You, Lord, and reignite the passion in our hearts for You.”

None of us can reignite our own passion; only the Holy Spirit can do so. However, we can immerse ourselves in these stories and ask God to reveal His glory to us.

So you can start by acknowledging your waning passion and asking God to refocus you. You can also open your Bible and read these stories, slowly and reflectively, noting what stands out to you about God. Or read these stories aloud and talk to God about them, trusting that He is this same way, right now, over your life. Your marriage. Your children. Your health. And over your fears.

Specific passages may include Genesis 1-3. Or read the Gospel of Mark and see the miracles and deeds of Jesus. Reflect on Job 38-42. Isaiah 40-46. Ephesians 1-2. Or put yourself smack in the middle of Revelation 4-5 or Revelation 19-22.

Get outside and be still before the Lord.

Not a reader? Get outside and be still before the Lord. Feel the summer heat. Walk in the cool grass. Count the stars. Forsake the evolution narrative and know that God created all that is out of nothing that was, for His glory and for you to delight in Him.

See God’s greatness in answered prayer or surprise blessings that you KNOW God did for you.

Here’s something else you can do: contrast what you believe about God’s majesty, His power, His authority, His goodness, His wisdom, and His love, with whatever it is that you are choosing over Him. What is this compared to the Lord?

Contrast what you believe about God’s power, His majesty, His authority, His goodness, His wisdom, and His love, with whatever it is that you are choosing over Him.

By immersing ourselves in Scripture and Creation, asking God to reveal Himself and His grandness to us, God can renew our focus and devotion to Him, and reignite the passion in our hearts for Him.

And then look out. For whenever exhausted, distracted Christians get passionate for the Lord, it fuels a desire to live a life that pleases God and makes a difference in the church and the world.
